Who needs diabetes education?
- People newly diagnosed with diabetes and their loved ones or family members
- People with diabetes wanting to learn more about new therapies and treatment
- People with diabetes needing help balancing medication, meal plan and exercise or monitoring the disease
What are the warning signs?
- Extreme thirst
- Occasional blurry vision
- Frequent urination
- Unusual tiredness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Frequent or recurring skin, gum, or bladder infection
- Tingling or numbness to your hands or feet
Are you at risk?
Anyone can develop diabetes. Each day 1,700 people are newly diagnosed with the disease. It is more common among those of African, Hispanic, Asian or Native American decent. People are also considered at a greater risk for diabetes if:
- You are over 45
- You are overweight
- You have a family history of diabetes
- You are a woman who has had a baby that weighed more than 9 lbs. at birth
Referrals required
A physician referral is required to participate in the Diabetes Education Program. Medicare and many private insurance providers cover costs associated with the program.
Join the Program
The Diabetes Education Program is offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Memorial Hospital. Call to learn about group meetings and individual counseling opportunities.
