October 21, 1999 was the ribbon cutting for the South Central Medical Education Site. The purpose of our site is stated below:

The Medical Education Network Sites are an integral part of the School of Medicine’s mission to implement rural health initiatives throughout the state of Kansas. The Network Sites work closely with the Health Policy Institute, State Data Board, Department of Health Services, Office of Rural Health and all health profession schools at KU and other Regents institutions. Activities coordinated by the Medical Education Network Sites include:

  1. Support local medical center educational programs by providing support services to community-based faculty and learners
  2. Coordinate development of activities for community-based faculty with the Office of Medical Education
  3. Ensure that the designed curricula are being delivered
  4. Coordinate local pre-medical student recruitment activities
  5. Participate in ongoing practice and community assessments and ensure that information obtained from these assessments continually improve the curriculum and educational programs of the School of Medicine
  6. Identify and develop collaborative practices to become health profession education sites
  7. Assist with locum tenens services for a variety of health professions and link these services with student and resident education
  8. Recommend improvements to statewide student/resident incentive programs
  9. Assist with statewide practice-based research network coordination
  10. Serve as an information clearinghouse for communities to easily access KU resources
  11. Assist coordinating the televideo system for clinical consultations, education, and administrative functions
  12. Assist communities in recruiting health care providers
  13. Assist Continuing Education offices in assessment of educational needs, delivery of innovative programs, and evaluation

Continuing Education

The Network Site coordinates and facilitate monthly continuing medical education. Topics are requested by area healthcare professionals, many times using our ITV resources. The site secretary applies for and keeps track of CME credit for physicians.

ITV Room

ITV Room The ITV room is a mediated classroom that is available for videoconferencing, power point presentation and internet access. The 3rd year surgical rotation students use the ITV room for interactive surgery lectures and the room is open to all students for study. On March 31, 2005 the network site received a grant from the Kansas Board of Regents in the amount of $10,000.00 (see appendix I). This grant was used to upgrade the ITV room with a Tandberg 880 MXP system. We are now able to use IP instead of ISDN lines which save the site the expense of phone calls and allow multisite participation. We used the ITV room on December 1, 2005 for a teleconference between a local physician and a KUMC resource and a child with autism. This saved the patient and family travel time, expense and access to expertise otherwise unavailable. Dr. Thomas also taught two classes over ITV to medical students coordinated by Diana Carter. The monthly physician CME’s are held in the ITV room. The ITV room is also used by hospital and community groups for meetings. The room is shared with Hutchinson Community College as a teaching facility.

Research

  • The Network Site in partnership with community wellness committee will be completing a six year planned Developmental Asset evaluation through the school system using California Kids Survey.
  • BMI Evaluations were also conducted in the local school system funded by the KHF grant for community childhood wellness.
  • Community based diet research on HDL Project 2002-2006

    Network Site Office

Our site is unique in that 3rd year students do their rotations in McPherson or Moundridge. They are housed in our new network site complex. Students have daily contact with the site secretary for any assistance that is needed. The network site secretary maintains a medical library for students and all health care professionals. We have two student computers which are connected to the internet and have direct access to Dykes Library. The network site secretary helps with literature searches for students and other medical professionals as requested.

    Medical Library

Medical Library The Medical Library is well used by physicians and students. Students often comment on our good selection of books. Old books that are replaced and removed from the shelves are very often given to students. A committee of physicians meets four times a year to review and update library resources. A plan was initiated this year to replace the computers in the office/library, replacing one a year beginning with the secretary’s computer. This will certainly be a nice addition for our students. Virtual library resources include access to the Dykes Library system, Up to Date, multiple textbooks, Internet resources and literature searches for local faculty.

    Students

Students that come to McPherson and Moundridge find a dedicated group of physicians who love to teach and share with students their knowledge and expertise.

Students often express how much they value this one on one time and the amount of teaching and experience they receive. Without a doubt the strength of the South Central site is our doctors!

    Comments from Students

"McPherson is a great place to do a rotation if you really want to feel like a doctor. It was by far, the most enjoyable rotation I have had in med school (and I am now finished with rotations)."

KU Med Student "You can learn to do things that you might not learn during a 3rd year rotation somewhere else, like dictating skills, writing orders, active (non-retractor) assistance on surgeries, and seeing patients in the ER."

"The nursing and support staff treat you like one of their own, and are very helpful in all aspects of the experience"
    -Nick Brockert

"I think McPherson is an excellent opportunity to receive a quality individualized instruction from a knowledgeable physician in a great facility. I had a truly rewarding experience."
    -Jon Gertken

KU Med Student "Coming to McPherson provided me with an excellent experience. There, I worked one-on-one with an excellent surgeon who not only surrendered much of his time teaching me, but also afforded me high level of responsibility in patient care. In addition, I would be remiss in not praising all the great and friendly staff who made my stay in McPherson extremely pleasant."
    -Jonathan Dubin

"McPherson gave me a great perspective of medicine in a smaller community. It was great to spend time in a place where people really wanted you to be there, instead of us having to be there. Every single person in McPherson treated us like old friends, and that is a worthwhile experience."
    -Brandon Bowers

"My time in McPherson was a wonderful opportunity to gain clinical/surgical experience in a one-on-one setting with extremely knowledgeable skilled physicians while experiencing first hand what it is like to be a clinician in a rural community."
    -Anthony Healy
