On behalf of McPherson Hospital, the McPherson Healthcare Foundation has launched a capital campaign and is coordinating fundraising efforts to secure $5 million in gifts and pledges over the next several months.

The aging infrastructure and space restraints the hospital has in its current space makes it very difficult to efficiently align services in a patient-friendly manner. And lack of clinical office space hampers the recruitment of new physicians, critical to future growth, hospital officials state.

The three-phase campaign, called "Caring for the Future," is designed to upgrade some of the hospital facilities. The current effort is focused on raising funds to cover the cost of Phase 1 of the project. Phase 1 includes repurposing the second floor of the main hospital building to accommodate space for up to seven new providers, as well as relocating to the first floor all second floor radiology services to improve patient convenience.

Campaign leaders say the best course to ensure a prosperous future for the city of McPherson and McPherson County is to develop a multi-phase, multi-year facility plan that will provide residents with high-quality facilities for health needs, assist in recruitment and retention of physicians, alleviate the need for local residents to travel to other communities for care, provide a broader range of services to residents, and maintain a competitive edge in recruitment of new businesses to the community.

The hospital is critical not only to maintaining the health and well-being of area citizens, but modern healthcare facilities provide essential infrastructure to secure business and industry.

McPherson Hospital has served the community and surrounding area for nearly 100 years and continues to be an integral part of the infrastructure of McPherson, offering health services to patients, jobs to citizens and vital spending in the community. Leaders say this is an opportunity to create a modern, efficient and patient-centered facility that will position the hospital well into the future.

Beginning in July, McPherson Hospital will be launching a new patient portal as part of a larger electronic medical record system. A patient portal is a website that allows a patient access to details about past treatments and what medications they are taking. Essentially, patients may use it to review past medical records, view lab results, and review appointments.

"This new service will be a tremendous tool for our patients to manage their healthcare in a timely and private manner," said McPherson Hospital vice-president of operations Terri Gehring. "As a managed facility of Via Christi Health in Wichita, we are able to share in these resources that enable our patients to access their health information in a way that hasnt been available before."

This patient portal service is part of a larger electronic medical record system that is being developed in hospitals and clinics across the state and nation. It is a part of a requirement to successfully complete CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) meaningful use criteria. Meaningful use is a term related to health care providers who are converting their information systems to electronic health records that will be accessible to providers and patients via web-based software.

"Only patients who are admitted to the hospital as an inpatient or visit the emergency department and register for the portal will be able to access their records through the hospital-based portal," Gehring commented. "Patients will set up their accounts, which will be similar to most any other Internet service utilizing an email-based username and a password that may be selected by the patient. Once the patients account is set up, they will be able to log on and access their past health information any time day or night."

The hospital will be assisting patients with this process beginning July 1.
